Disney has announced a new Kingdom Hearts anime series that will be coming to Disney Plus and Disney Channel. The project is being developed in partnership with Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix, the developer behind the game franchise.
According to Disney, the anime will reimagine the Kingdom Hearts adventure through an entirely new story. The series is intended to expand the wider Kingdom Hearts universe while retaining the characters that have become closely associated with the franchise.
“Kingdom Hearts has captivated gamers everywhere with its unique blend of adventure and imagination,” Disney Kids & Family president Ayo Davis said. “There’s something really exciting about taking a world fans have spent years exploring through the games and bringing it to life in a completely new way. And with a creative team that is working closely with the legendary Tetsuya Nomura, our new series will be unmistakably ‘Kingdom Hearts,’ while giving fans a whole new way to experience the world they love.”
No release date or further details about the story have been announced at this stage.
The Kingdom Hearts franchise originally launched in 2002 as a collaboration between Square Enix and Disney. The action RPG series follows Sora, a Keyblade wielder who travels between different worlds alongside Donald Duck and Goofy while fighting the Heartless.
The games have expanded considerably since the original release, combining Disney characters and settings with Square Enix’s characters and original Kingdom Hearts lore. The series has also developed an increasingly complex storyline spanning multiple games and generations of characters.
The new Kingdom Hearts anime will offer another way for audiences to experience the franchise, although Disney has yet to reveal which characters or story elements will feature in the new adaptation.
