New claims suggest that a Metroid film adaptation may be under consideration, with Sony and Universal reportedly competing to secure the rights. The information comes from social media sources, including MyTimeToShineHello and V SCOOPER, and remains unconfirmed.
According to MyTimeToShineHello, “Universal trying to get the rights for Metroid and more characters from Nintendo,” indicating that discussions may extend beyond a single property. Additional commentary from V SCOOPER suggests that Sony is also actively pursuing the project, stating that “Sony is one of the stronger contenders for Metroid, Universal is also fighting for it,” with both studios said to be leaning toward a live-action approach.
The same set of claims also references other Nintendo-related projects in early stages. MyTimeToShineHello noted that a Pikmin movie is “also looking for writers,” while V SCOOPER added that the project has faced challenges in development but continues to be pushed forward with involvement from Illumination.
These reports follow earlier rumors pointing to a broader expansion of Nintendo’s film efforts, including projects tied to franchises such as Kirby, Donkey Kong, and Star Fox. Nintendo has seen renewed success in the film space following The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023 and its sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, released on April 1, 2026. A live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda is also currently scheduled for May 7, 2027.
Neither Nintendo, Sony, nor Universal have confirmed any plans for a Metroid film.
