Muramasa: Revenant Blades Announced for 2027 Release

Marvelous USA has announced Muramasa: Revenant Blades, a modern revival of Vanillaware’s acclaimed 2D action RPG, during the latest Nintendo Direct presentation. The game is currently in development and is scheduled to launch in early 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.

The project revisits the world of Muramasa, originally released on the Wii in 2009 and later reintroduced as Muramasa: Rebirth on PlayStation Vita in 2013. This new version has been rebuilt for modern platforms with support for up to 4K resolution, expanded gameplay systems, and a range of new features. Notably, it also marks Vanillaware’s first PC release, bringing one of the studio’s most celebrated titles to a new audience.

Among the additions is the game’s first-ever full English voiceover, accompanied by new language localizations. Players will also have immediate access to all six playable storylines from the beginning of the game. In addition to original protagonists Momohime and Kisuke, the title includes Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru, and Rajaki, characters previously introduced through the PlayStation Vita release.

Set in a supernatural version of feudal Japan, the story centers on a struggle over the legendary swords forged by Senji Muramasa. These powerful weapons grant extraordinary abilities to their wielders but also drive them toward bloodshed and madness. As rival factions battle for control of the blades, demonic forces and malevolent spirits spread across the land, intertwining the destinies of six characters caught in the conflict.

Vanillaware has also expanded the combat experience with updated controls, more than 100 swords to forge, and a variety of skills that can be upgraded and customized. Additional gameplay modes and options have been added, offering players new ways to experience the adventure while showcasing the studio’s signature hand-crafted art style.

Marvelous says the remastered visuals have been enhanced for modern displays, bringing the game’s environments, character animations, and artwork to life with greater clarity. The company describes the release as the most complete version of the game to date, combining all major content with new presentation and gameplay improvements.

Physical editions will be offered for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Standard editions will be priced at $49.99 on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, while the Nintendo Switch 2 version will retail for $59.99 and include the full game on the cartridge. A Limited Edition will also be available for $89.99 on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, and $99.99 on Nintendo Switch 2.

The Limited Edition package includes a copy of the game, an art book featuring Vanillaware artwork, a soundtrack CD with selected tracks from composer Basiscape, and a 10 x 14-inch folding byōbu screen showcasing additional artwork from the game.

Muramasa: Revenant Blades is scheduled to launch in early 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. Further details regarding digital editions will be announced at a later date.
