Prominently featured in the PS Plus Essential lineup for May, 2025, is Balatro, a deck-building roguelike game with a poker theme, developed by LocalThunk and published by Playstack. It launched on February 20, 2024, for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, followed by a macOS version on March 1. Mobile versions for Android and iOS became available on September 26, 2024. Players use traditional poker hands from a standard 52-card deck to earn points and overcome blinds within a set number of turns. As the game progresses, blinds become increasingly challenging, but players can obtain jokers and other cards, bought from a randomized shop between rounds, that introduce special effects, influence scoring, or modify the deck’s structure to gain a strategic edge.
