Skyblivion Team Faces Legal Threats From Former Volunteer Over Code Dispute

by Salal Awan

The development team behind The Elder Scrolls: Skyblivion has accused a former volunteer developer of making legal threats following a disagreement over the use and maintenance of code he contributed to the project. The dispute has reportedly escalated despite the team removing the developer’s work and rebuilding the affected systems from scratch.

In a statement, the Skyblivion team explained that the volunteer recently left the project, after which discussions began about how his existing contributions would be maintained. The disagreement centred on the team’s decision to decompile portions of his code, something the former developer reportedly opposed.

According to the team, decompilation became necessary after access to the original source code repository was revoked. The code had already been integrated into the project, and developers needed a way to maintain its functionality and address technical issues.

Skyblivion claims the former volunteer subsequently escalated the disagreement into legal threats, including demands for the real names and home addresses of the project’s volunteer team leads. The developers described these demands as disproportionate and said they could not accept them.

The team also criticised what it called a “take your ball and go home” approach, arguing that such behaviour goes against the collaborative nature of the modding community. Skyblivion is developed by volunteers, with contributions from numerous individuals working towards a shared release.

The developers said they consulted legal counsel and remain confident in their right to maintain code that was voluntarily submitted to the project. Nevertheless, they decided to remove the disputed code entirely and rebuild the affected system, introducing improvements during the process.

According to the statement, the decision was made in good faith to protect volunteers from further stress and establish a clean separation from the former contributor. However, the team claims the individual has continued escalating his threats despite the removal of his work.

Skyblivion also urged its community not to target or harass the former volunteer. The team said it wishes him well and hopes the matter can be resolved without further conflict.
