Nakamura was joined on the panel by Sonic creative director and character supervisor, Kazuyuki Hoshino, and Sonic X Shadow Generations director, Katsuyuki Shigihara. Hoshino mentioned that, for future Sonic projects, Sonic Team plans to draw inspiration from previous game iterations.

Regarding Sonic X Shadow Generations, Hoshino talked about Shadow’s design, and how it is influenced by traditional Kabuki Sujikuma makeup, which symbolizes a powerful superhuman hero. Nakamura discussed the White Space hub in the game, and how it was initially intended to be smaller than its final version. Shigihara revealed that Shadow’s Doom Powers and Black Arms draw their energy from Earth.

Hoshino mentioned that the reveal of Eggman and Maria’s extended family in Sonic X Shadow Generations inspired ideas for an Eggman spin-off game and the potential to explore family drama within the Robotnik family. Nakamura said that Silver was initially conceptualized as an alien with psychic powers before becoming a time-traveling hedgehog from the future.

For the uninitiated, Shadow Generations is a 2024 platformer developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. It comes bundled with a remaster of Sonic Generations in Sonic X Shadow Generations. The collection was released on October 25, 2024, for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows. See our review for more details.
