Square Enix appears to be preparing a large slate of Dragon Quest announcements ahead of Dragon Quest Day on May 27, as fans recently discovered eight unlisted videos added to the official Dragon Quest YouTube playlist.
The playlist activity was first spotted through Square Enix’s official Dragon Quest video archive, with the hidden uploads quickly sparking speculation across the community about what could be revealed during the franchise’s annual celebration event.
Based on known announcements and rumors, one of the videos is believed to be connected to Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, while another is rumored to be tied to a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Dragon Quest XI. Some are also expecting a trailer related to the latest Dragon Quest X expansion.
This year’s Dragon Quest Day carries additional significance as the series approaches its 40th anniversary in 2027. Originally launched in 1986 by creator Yuji Horii alongside late Dragon Ball artist Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama, the franchise went on to become one of the defining pillars of the Japanese RPG genre. The series has shipped more than 97 million units worldwide and also holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running Japanese RPG franchise.
Momentum around the series has continued to build in recent years. Dragon Quest was recently inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame, while Square Enix has continued revisiting older entries through HD-2D remakes. The company already released Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake alongside the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake collection, with fans continuing to speculate about additional remasters and modernized versions of classic games.
Among the franchise’s upcoming projects, Dragon Quest XII remains the most closely watched. Square Enix previously said the game would feature a darker tone, player-driven choices, and significant changes to the traditional combat system, though updates on the title have remained limited since its announcement.
