Sega is currently hiring a scenario writer for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, a move that is already drawing attention from fans waiting for the series’ next major 3D installment.
The job listing was recently published by Sega and outlines a wide range of responsibilities tied directly to Sonic game development. According to the listing, the role focuses primarily on game scenario creation while also involving recording supervision, progress management, and collaboration with directors and other development staff.
The responsibilities include “scenario creation,” “setting problems and implementing solutions based on game reviews,” “managing and judging the quality of voice recording,” and “creating and managing progress charts that integrate scenario and gameplay.”
Sega is specifically seeking applicants with at least three years of experience as a lead scenario writer for console games. The company also lists experience training other writers and strong communication skills among the core requirements.
Interestingly, the preferred qualifications explicitly mention being “a fan of the Sonic series.”
The listing has sparked discussion online largely because it arrives nearly four years after the release of Sonic Frontiers, the franchise’s last major 3D entry.
Released in 2022, Sonic Frontiers marked a significant shift for the series by introducing large-scale “Open Zone” environments that blended open exploration with traditional high-speed platforming sections, combat systems, and puzzle-solving mechanics.
The game represented one of the franchise’s biggest gameplay reinventions in years and was generally viewed as a successful modernization of Sonic’s core formula.
While Sega has not officially announced the next mainline 3D Sonic game, the new hiring activity suggests ongoing development work tied to the franchise. The emphasis on scenario writing, production management, and collaboration across departments may also indicate that narrative and world-building could continue playing a larger role in future Sonic projects following Sonic Frontiers’ more story-focused direction.
