A new Dragon Quest livestream appears to be scheduled for May 27 as part of the franchise’s 40th anniversary celebrations, with series creator Yuji Horii reportedly teasing the announcement of the next Dragon Quest title during a recent podcast appearance.

According to comments shared from the KosoKoso podcast, Horii mentioned that the next Dragon Quest game will be announced on Dragon Quest Day alongside “various other things besides the next title.” The podcast episode has since been made private, while the reported anniversary livestream video connected to the announcement has also reportedly been taken down from public view.

The May 27 broadcast is expected to mark the 40th anniversary of the Dragon Quest franchise, which first launched in 1986 and went on to become one of the defining names in the Japanese RPG genre. The series has long been associated with its traditional turn-based gameplay, fantasy storytelling, Akira Toriyama’s creature designs, Koichi Sugiyama’s music, and Yuji Horii’s direction.

It remains unclear which project will headline the event. Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate is still the biggest unreleased title tied to the franchise, though Square Enix has remained mostly quiet about the project since its initial reveal. The game is expected to feature a darker tone and changes to the combat system compared to previous entries.

Rumors surrounding Dragon Quest Day 2026 have also pointed toward possible remake announcements or spin-off projects. Speculation has included a potential Dragon Quest IX remake as well as new entries in the Monsters or Builders sub-series, though nothing has been officially confirmed at this stage.
