Xbox and Bethesda’s next action role-playing game, The Elder Scrolls VI, is currently in a playable state, and its development is coming along well.
During an interview with Variety following this year’s Xbox Games Showcase, Xbox executive vice president and chief content officer Matt Booty revealed that development on The Elder Scrolls VI is coming along well and that he has seen the game in a playable state. While Bethesda’s next major role-playing game has become a highly anticipated title since its brief announcement teaser back in 2018, official updates on its progress have been very limited.
Booty acknowledged the challenge of managing fan expectations whenever Bethesda appears during Xbox presentations. According to him, one of the most difficult aspects of his role is finding the right balance between generating excitement and waiting until a game is ready to be shown to the public. “I would say one of the more challenging balancing acts of someone in a job like mine is balancing that you want to go show the world all the cool stuff you’re working on, and you want to get them excited early, but we also know that we want to wait till the right moment,” he said.
The executive explained that when a game is shown publicly, it also creates an expectation that its release is nearby, resulting in timing being an important consideration for both developers and publishers. Xbox wants to ensure that when The Elder Scrolls VI is revealed, it represents the best possible version of the game.
Booty discussed his recent visit to Bethesda Game Studios, confirming that he’s personally seen the game running. “So I can tell you, having visited Bethesda and sat with Todd and seen [The Elder Scrolls VI] playing, it looks amazing, and it’s coming along well. And we’ll make sure to announce it and really reveal it at the right time,” he said.
