Sonic Colors Ultimate Rated For Xbox Series But Not PS5

by Ali Haider

Sonic Colors Ultimate joins the ranks of some of the recent games that appear to feature optimization for the Xbox Series but not PS5.

Sonic Colors Ultimate is out later this year. It will be released on the current-generation consoles in addition to PC. The ESRB and PEGI rating of the game mentions Xbox Series, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The only platform that doesn’t appear to be mentioned is the PS5, just like was the case with Psychonauts 2.

On the official Xbox Store, the game isn’t specifically listed as having Xbox Series optimization but the store does have a tag for 4K UHD for the game. This suggests that Sonic Colors Ultimate will run at 4K resolution on the Xbox Series, and possibly the PS5. However, this could rule out a native version.

In the case of the Xbox Series consoles, they can benefit from an enhanced backward compatibility mode compared to the PS5 that allows them to run the game at a higher frame rate, e.g 120 FPS. Sonic Colors Ultimate doesn’t have an official specification given for its resolution and frame rate but the PlayStation Store listing mentions that it runs in the backward compatibility mode on the PS5. This could imply that the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X version will be used as the base for the game on the current-generation consoles but just like Biomutant, there could be some additional benefits on the Xbox Series.

The game will be out on September 7, 2021. The game is planned to launch on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It will be playable as part of the backward compatibility on the PS5.
