by Salal Awan

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi has shed light on how Tifa Lockhart’s appearance in Street Fighter 6 came to fruition. Speaking with content creator Maximilian Dood, Hamaguchi explained that the popular Final Fantasy VII character had received numerous requests to appear in other projects over the years.

According to Hamaguchi, interest in Tifa extended beyond video games, with various opportunities presented to Square Enix. Despite the demand, the company was cautious about how and where the character would be used because of her global popularity.

Hamaguchi said that Square Enix understood how beloved Tifa is among players around the world and did not want to approve collaborations lightly. He explained that the opportunity to work with Capcom arrived at an ideal moment, with Street Fighter remaining a highly popular franchise and the collaboration aligning with the announcement of Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3, Revelation. As a result, discussions between the two companies progressed smoothly.

Capcom officially unveiled Tifa as a guest fighter for Street Fighter 6 during Summer Game Fest 2026. She is set to join the game’s Year 4 DLC lineup alongside returning character Bosch and newcomers Yasmine and Arjun, with her release scheduled for early 2027.

Street Fighter 6 director Takayuki Nakayama previously revealed that Tifa has been redesigned specifically for the fighting game’s universe. Her moveset will incorporate her signature Zangan-ryu martial arts style, while the Materia system from Final Fantasy VII has been reworked into a new gameplay mechanic tailored for Street Fighter 6.
