Final Fantasy VII Revelation Details Reveal Expanded World, Player Choice, and New Combat Systems

by Ali Haider

Square Enix has shared a substantial new batch of details on Final Fantasy VII Revelation through an interview with director Naoki Hamaguchi published by Denfaminicogamer. The information, translated by ResetEra user Jaredus, sheds light on the game’s world design, story structure, combat systems, and current development status.

One of the biggest revelations concerns exploration. Hamaguchi confirmed that players will gain access to the Highwind very early in the adventure, allowing them to freely travel across an expanded world map. Unlike previous entries in the remake trilogy, Revelation will place a stronger emphasis on player-driven exploration, with players encouraged to choose their own destinations rather than follow a heavily guided route.

The game’s world has been significantly enlarged compared to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and functions as a globe, allowing players to eventually reach the opposite side by continuously flying in one direction. Midgar will return as a fully explorable location, while Wutai has been expanded considerably from its depiction in the original game. Rocket Town and the underwater regions from the original Final Fantasy VII have also been confirmed to return.

Story-wise, Revelation will feature a greater emphasis on player choice. According to Hamaguchi, decisions can affect progression, unlock different story content, and alter certain narrative developments. However, despite the increased focus on player agency, the remake trilogy will conclude with a single definitive ending rather than multiple endings. Hamaguchi stated that while players may experience different scenes and events throughout their journeys, Square Enix intends for the trilogy to have one official conclusion.

The director also revealed that Zack will play a much larger role than he did in Rebirth, while Reno and the Turks will receive significantly more attention throughout the story. The Wutai storyline has been expanded with stronger political themes, and players will encounter new stories tied to locations and events that were only briefly explored in the original game.

On the gameplay front, Revelation introduces a new FITS system that allows characters to adopt different combat roles. Each playable character will have four FITS available from the start of the game, with unique skill trees, progression paths, and outfits tied to each role. Examples include traditional Final Fantasy jobs such as Black Mage.

Hamaguchi also shared new details on Vincent and Cid. Vincent can freely switch between his human and beast forms without a strict time limitation, while Cid specializes in aerial combat. The game will feature more Synergy abilities and combination attacks than previous entries, including interactions between Vincent, Cid, and other party members.

Several changes are also being made to side content. Mini-games are returning in full force, but Square Enix is adjusting their difficulty following feedback from Rebirth. Easy and Normal difficulty settings will be available, and players will have the option to skip certain mini-games entirely. The iconic Tifa versus Scarlet slap fight from the original game is also set to return as a playable mini-game.

Hamaguchi confirmed that development has entered its final polishing phase, with the entire game already playable from beginning to end, including side content. He also revealed that the Summer Game Fest 2026 trailer was captured on PlayStation 5 hardware and that the game is already running on Nintendo Switch 2. The team is currently focused on polishing the PS5 and PC versions before conducting additional optimization work for Nintendo’s platform.

The game’s central theme is “Resolve,” reflecting both the characters’ preparation for the final battle and the developers’ commitment to bringing the remake trilogy to a proper conclusion. Hamaguchi said he is particularly proud of the ending, describing it as the culmination of a journey that has spanned more than a decade for both the development team and fans.

While no release date was announced, Hamaguchi noted that Square Enix is considering showcasing Final Fantasy VII Revelation at Tokyo Game Show, suggesting that more information may be shared in the coming months.
