The Next Mortal Kombat May be Another Reboot, According to Rumors

A fresh round of rumors regarding the next Mortal Kombat game has surfaced on 4chan. The existence of a new game in the series has yet to be confirmed by developer NetherRealm Studios, so eager fans will have to make do with any details they can get. If the latest rumors have their way, the next Mortal Kombat game is all set to be another reboot. If the story wasn’t already convoluted enough, it most certainly would be under such a scenario.

Other details shared in the rumor include some new ancestral twists. Both Sonya Blade’s father and an ancestor of Kung Lao will make an appearance as playable characters. But that’s not all. The rumors also state that the Krypt will now feature combat, and your character will have the ability to learn new moves from certain opponents. It’s also said to be bigger in scope, featuring new areas to explore.

The rumor also states that Mortal Kombat XII (if that’s what it’s called) will run on a modified version of Unreal Engine 4, and will arrive sometime in the year 2023. Of course, even if the rumor is true, there’s a chance the project may move over to Unreal Engine 5, as has been the case with other future Unreal Engine releases.

Much like all the other 4chan rumors, this one should be taken with a grain of salt. That said, it’s hard to deny that some of these rumors sound promising. There’s no mention of platforms, but the PS5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PC are a given. Whether the sequel to Mortal Kombat 11 will be cross-gen, and, therefore, also available on PS4 and Xbox One remains a question mark.
