Nintendo has announced that it will begin rolling out revised versions of selected Switch and Switch 2 products across Europe from summer 2026, introducing user-replaceable batteries ahead of new European battery regulations that take effect in February 2027.
The company said the updated models are being introduced in preparation for the upcoming rules and stressed that there will be no functional differences between the current products and the revised versions. The rollout will take place gradually, with availability varying by country depending on manufacturing and distribution.
The first updated products are expected to appear from summer 2026, with additional hardware launching throughout autumn, winter and early 2027.
Nintendo’s revised Switch 2 console is scheduled to arrive in autumn. While its overall functionality remains unchanged, the updated model will feature a slightly smaller 5,172mAh battery compared with the current 5,220mAh unit. The console will also be marginally heavier, weighing approximately 411g instead of 401g, or around 548g with the included Joy-Con 2 controllers attached.
The bundled Joy-Con 2 controllers will also include user-replaceable batteries. Standalone Joy-Con 2 pairs are expected to launch during winter 2026, with battery capacity remaining unchanged, although each controller will weigh around 2g more than the current version.
Nintendo is also revising the Switch 2 Pro Controller. The updated controller, due this winter, will feature an 897mAh battery, down from the current 1,070mAh capacity, while its weight will decrease from approximately 235g to 228g.
Elsewhere, selected colours of the original Joy-Con controllers will begin transitioning to the new design from summer 2026. These revisions will retain the same battery capacity and weight as existing models.
Two retro controllers are also set to receive updated versions in early 2027. The Nintendo 64 controller will maintain its existing battery capacity while gaining approximately 1g in weight. Meanwhile, the Nintendo GameCube controller for Switch 2 will receive a slightly larger 525mAh battery, up from 500mAh, and will weigh around 215g, an increase of roughly 5g.
Nintendo said further details will be shared closer to each product’s release. The company also confirmed that battery replacement kits for all revised products will be made available through the Nintendo Store in Europe in the future.
