GTA 6 Leak Frustrates Rockstar Staff Despite Tighter Security Measures

The latest GTA 6 leak has reportedly caused significant frustration and exhaustion among Rockstar Games employees, with the breach coming at a particularly difficult stage of development. According to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, Rockstar staff are frustrated not only because their work was leaked, but because the incident happened despite the strict security measures introduced following the previous breach in 2022.

Rockstar introduced major changes to its security policies after the 2022 GTA 6 leak. Beginning in 2024, employees were required to return to the office five days a week, while access to important work tools, servers and game builds from outside the office was largely restricted.

The measures were introduced specifically to prevent another major leak. Schreier explained that employees were required to be physically present in the office to access the systems needed to work on the game, which created additional difficulties for those who needed flexibility around family commitments and other responsibilities.

That makes the latest breach particularly frustrating for some employees. As Schreier put it, “All of that, all those new protocols, all of that new security, all of that diligence, and yet the game has leaked again.”

The latest leak is also different from the 2022 incident because the footage reportedly comes from a much more recent build of GTA 6. The leaked material showed gameplay involving Jason, including basketball, driving around Miami, flying a propeller plane, shooting and a knife fight.

Schreier said the leaked footage is much closer to the game that players will eventually receive, although he stressed that GTA 6 is still being developed and can change before its November release.

“This felt like real footage that is pretty close to if not exactly what will be playable in a couple of months,” Schreier said.

The situation has reportedly affected morale inside Rockstar as the team approaches the final stages of development. Schreier stressed that GTA 6 is not yet finished, with thousands of people around the world continuing to work on the game ahead of its November 19 release.

“And by the way, it’s still not finished. I think that important note here. It is August of 2026. The game is pretty close to being finished, but it is not finished,” Schreier said.

He added that developers are continuing to work on the game until the final stages before launch, making the timing of the leak especially difficult for the team.

“It’s a really bad time for this something like this to happen just as you’re kind of heading in your final sprint and you want to see the game finished already,” Schreier said.

There is also frustration surrounding how the leaked material was presented. Schreier said some Rockstar employees were unhappy that their work was being shown unofficially, particularly because the footage was reportedly presented by someone who was not particularly skilled at playing the game and was covered by large CyberLeek watermarks.

Despite the frustration, Schreier said some employees recognise that the situation could have been worse. However, there is also a broader sense of frustration that Rockstar continues to be targeted because of the scale and importance of its games.

“I think it definitely definitely could have been worse is a sentiment that I’ve heard,” Schreier said.

He described the situation as a difficult reality for a studio working on what is expected to become one of the biggest games in the world, noting that Rockstar has faced similar incidents throughout its history.

GTA 6 remains scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
