Sega’s future plans for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise have been revealed, based on the latest leaked information.
An alleged PowerPoint presentation from Sega has revealed plans for the Sonic franchise for the year 2024, including the launch of a Knuckles TV Spin off and Season 3 of Sonic Prime in Q1, 2024, a new mobile game in Spring, 2024, Sonic SuperStars DLC, a possible animated prologue for a new unannounced game, the aforementioned new unannounced game in Holiday, 2024, and the Sonic 3 movie in December, 2024.
With respect to playable content, 2024 will allegedly see the release of a new mobile game based on the Sonic franchise, DLC for Sonic Superstars, and a brand new mainline release. Coupled with the upcoming 3rd movie and TV series, there are plenty of reasons for Sonic fans to be excited about in the year 2024.
The launch of a possible animated prologue prior to the new game release in Holiday, 2024, is in line with what the Sonic series Producer, Takashi Iizuka, had expressed not long ago. Speaking during the recent Tokyo Game Show 2023 panel consisting of representatives from Sega, Capcom, and Square Enix, Iizuka stated that he wanted to coincide game releases with other media projects.
He mentioned that, previously, one development team would finish work on a game, think of what to work on next, and then move on. Iizuka stated that development teams were planning their games to line up with other Sonic productions outside of games, such as movies and TV shows, and schedule their releases to coincide with these media projects.
The latest entry in the Sonic series, Sonic Superstars, is an upcoming platformer developed by Arzest and Sonic Team and published by Sega. It features side-scrolling gameplay reminiscent of the classic Sonic the Hedgehog games that graced the Sega Genesis during the 1990s. Players can assume the roles of four iconic characters: Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles “Tails” Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Amy Rose.
