Shigeru Miyamoto Shares Why “Nintendo Would Rather Go In A Different Direction” From AI

Legendary game creator Shigeru Miyamoto has shared why “Nintendo would rather go in a different direction” from AI.

During a recent interview, game designer Shigeru Miyamoto talked about the industry shift towards AI-based development. He said that it might seem like Nintendo is simply going in the opposite direction for the sake of going in the opposite direction from AI, but it really is more about trying to find what makes the company special. He mentioned that there is a lot of talk about the significance of artificial intelligence in the future. According to him, when that happens, everyone starts to go in the same direction, but that is where Nintendo would rather go in a different direction.

On the subject of competition, Miyamoto shared a quote from former Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi. He said that, back in the day, Mr. Yamauchi would tell him and others at the company that they are not good at fighting. According to Yamauchi, they are weak, and, therefore, they should not go picking fights with other companies. Miyamoto explained that this had been Nintendo’s longstanding motto in its pursuit of originality.

Regarding the Nintendo museum, the game designer mentioned that when he puts himself in the consumer’s perspective, he wants to see behind the curtains. For him, creating the museum is very un-Nintendo-like. He added that if Mr. Yamauchi had seen it, he would probably have not approved of it.

As for how Nintendo will evolve into a media brand, Miyamoto stated that if the company gets to a point where it makes 10 movies, maybe it can open a theater next door.

In related news, alleged prototype images of the Nintendo Switch successor appeared on a file hosting site alongside a slide that details the upcoming console’s hardware specs. Read about it here.
