Shrek 5 Sparks Controversy Among Fans Over Animation Style: “It Looks Awful”

by Greg Martin

Universal Pictures has unveiled the first look at Shrek 5, but the reveal has not been well-received by fans. The initial trailer, labeled as a “Cast Announcement,” features familiar characters like Shrek, Donkey, and Princess Fiona, alongside other supporting cast members. However, the new animation style introduced in the trailer has sparked widespread criticism, with many fans describing it as “awful.”

Fans took to social media to express their disappointment, comparing the new animation unfavorably to the style of the previous Shrek films. Some comments likened the animation to AI-generated content, while others called for a return to the original style used in the first four movies. One user even referenced the backlash that led to the redesign of Sonic the Hedgehog in its live-action movie adaptation, suggesting a similar movement should be organized for Shrek 5.

Adding to the controversy, Universal Pictures has disabled comments on the official YouTube trailer, likely in response to the negative feedback. While it’s unclear whether the animation in the trailer represents the final look of the movie, some speculate that it could still be a work in progress. If fan criticism gains enough momentum, Universal may reconsider its approach, similar to how Paramount adjusted Sonic the Hedgehog’s design after backlash.
