Sega’s Sonic Superstars is set for release in the month of October, 2023, based on the latest information.
Online retailer GameStop had updated its store page for Sonic Superstars with a tentative release window of October, 2023. However, it has since replaced it with its usual “TBD” label. The mention of October on the store page was likely done prematurely and was, therefore, reverted. The retailer may perhaps be waiting for Sega to make an official announcement in this regard.
Those who place their pre-order for Sonic Superstars via GameStop will receive some bonus items, including an exclusive LEGO Eggman in-game character skin, an acrylic display stand, and a reversible game cover.
Scheduled for release in late 2023, Sonic Superstars is an upcoming platform game developed by Arzest and Sonic Team, with Sega as the publisher. This highly anticipated title embraces side-scrolling gameplay reminiscent of the classic Sonic the Hedgehog games that graced the Sega Genesis during the 1990s. Players can assume the roles of four iconic characters: Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles “Tails” Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Amy Rose. Together, they venture through side-scrolling levels, embarking on a mission to defeat the nefarious Doctor Eggman and Fang the Sniper. Adding a new twist, Superstars introduces power-ups that can be acquired by collecting the coveted Chaos Emeralds.
Takashi Iizuka, the head of Sonic Team, had expressed his desire to rejuvenate Sonic’s traditional side-scrolling formula, allowing it to thrive independently from the 3D games. While initial plans for a collaboration with the developers of Sonic Mania (2017) did not come to fruition, Iizuka initiated discussions with Arzest, a studio founded by Naoto Ohshima, the co-creator of Sonic. This collaboration marks Ohshima’s return to the Sonic franchise since his involvement in Sonic Adventure (1998). Arzest aims to capture the essence of the beloved Genesis Sonic gameplay while incorporating innovative new game mechanics.
Sonic Superstars is set to launch on multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, providing a wide range of options for players to experience the game’s nostalgic platforming adventure.
