The rumored upcoming Halo multiplayer game codenamed Project Ekur has been canceled, according to a new report.
In his new video, Halo insider and content creator Rebs Gaming reported that the previously rumored Halo multiplayer project, internally codenamed Project Ekur, has been canceled, He mentioned that while his prior information on the game appeared accurate at the time, new details from multiple Halo Studios employees indicates that the project is no longer being worked on.
According to the content creator, Project Ekur was initially prototyped by Certain Affinity before development shifted to Halo Studios. In a previous report, he claimed that sources familiar with the studio had identified Ekur as one of several new Halo projects in development. However, he now said that those earlier sources were unaware of more recent internal changes.
According to Rebs’ recent sources, Halo Studios spent much of last year developing Project Ekur, but sometime during the summer, at least part of the development team was reassigned to work on Halo: Campaign Evolved. However, he was unabl not confirm whether the staffing shift was the sole reason behind Ekur’s cancellation.
The content creator acknowledged that he currently doesn’t know what project will replace Ekur, but pointed to Halo Studios’ previous statement that fans can expect an update at the Halo Championship Series (HCS) before the end of the year. Because competitive HCS events are built around traditional Halo multiplayer gameplay, he speculated that Halo Studios may instead be focusing on a more classic multiplayer experience.
Rebs also suggested that Project Ekur may have been only one component of a larger multiplayer initiative, meaning other Halo multiplayer components could still be in development. In a prior video, he mentioned a source who accurately revealed details on Halo: Campaign Evolved before it went public. According to that source, Halo Studios is also developing a multiplayer game built around a live-service model comparable to Fortnite, with ongoing content updates planned after launch.
