Microsoft is asking inactive Xbox Series X|S users to trade in their consoles at partner retailer Best Buy for up to 375 US Dollars back.

The company is targeting players who have moved on to gaming on PC or other platforms, encouraging them to turn their unused Xbox Series X|S consoles into a gift card through a simple trade in program at partner retailer Best Buy. As shown in the screenshot below, Microsoft is sending out emails to inactive Xbox Series X|S users, encouraging them to receive up to 375 US Dollars in exchange for their consoles. The actual trade-in value will likely vary based on the console model, condition, and applicable Best Buy terms.

The campaign comes at an interesting time for the gaming industry, as concerns about hardware availability and rising component costs continue to linger. Demand for RAM and storage has been affected by the rapid expansion of AI data centers, adding pressure to the supply chains that serve consumer electronics manufacturers. Microsoft’s trade-in campaign is likely intended as one of several ways to counter limited console availability due to component shortages.

Another possible factor is the upcoming release of Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set for November 19, 2026. With massive interest surrounding the game, Microsoft may benefit from bringing inactive Xbox Series X|S consoles back into the retail market.

Regardless of the reason behind the offer from Microsoft, inactive Xbox owners now have an incentive to let go of hardware they no longer use. Though, it’s worth mentioning that new Xbox Series X and Xbox Series X Digital Edition retail for 799.99 US Dollars and 749.99 US Dollars, respectively, which is over twice of the maximum trade in program at Best Buy. As such, it is recommended to also explore other avenues for selling console hardware.
