Xbox CEO Asha Sharma Invites Shawn Layden to Talk After Public Criticism of Microsoft Strategy

by Ali Haider

A public exchange on LinkedIn between Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden has drawn attention following criticism of Microsoft’s gaming strategy. The interaction began under a post discussing Xbox Game Pass and broader concerns about its long-term sustainability.

The discussion was sparked by Joost van Dreunen, who referenced a leaked memo attributed to Sharma suggesting that Game Pass “has become too expensive,” raising questions about whether charging players for such a service remains viable. Responding to the post, Layden offered a critical view of Microsoft’s current direction, writing, “They are trying so hard to will this into health, despite unfavorable diagnostics and a grim prognosis. A clarifying post mortem would do the entire industry some good.”

Sharma replied directly to Layden in the same thread with a brief but notable response, stating, “I would love to chat sometime.” The exchange, while limited in detail, reflects an open acknowledgment of the criticism and a willingness to engage in discussion publicly.

Sharma was appointed as CEO of Microsoft Gaming in February 2026, succeeding Phil Spencer. Her background differs from traditional gaming leadership, with prior roles including President of Product in Microsoft’s Core AI division and COO of Instacart. Her appointment signaled a shift in Xbox’s strategic direction, with increased emphasis on artificial intelligence, platform expansion, and evolving digital business models.

Despite this shift, Sharma has also indicated a continued focus on console audiences while positioning Xbox for a broader, cross-platform future. The LinkedIn interaction comes at a time when Microsoft’s gaming strategy, particularly around Game Pass, remains under close scrutiny within the industry.
