How To Trade Pokémon Between Pokémon Sword and Shield:

Pokemon trade can be done both locally and online in both versions of Sword and Shield just like any of the previous Pokemon games, but you have to know about certain things before trading your Pokemon.

When you trade a high-level Pokemon and you are not a gym trainer of that level, it may not listen to what you say. To make him listen you have to earn enough gym badges.

When you trade a Pokemon already having a Nickname, you will not be able to change its Nickname after the trade.

How To Trade Pokémon Online In Pokémon Sword and Shield

In order to do online trade of a Pokemon in Sword and Shield, you will need a Nintendo Online Subscription. In order to trade locally, you will not need any online subscription.

In Pokemon Sword and Shield, a local trade will be possible through Link Trade by using the Y-Comm.

What Are Surprise Trades and How To Surprise Trade Pokémon

Sword and Shield have a unique type of trade known as the Surprise Trade. In a Surprise Trade, you have to choose a box randomly and the Pokemon inside the box will be put up for trade in the game. It will choose a random partner online and the trade will happen and you will end up with a random Pokemon.

This is why it is called a Surprise Trade because you don’t know the Pokemon that you are putting up for trade and what will you get in return for it. Surprise Trade is a feature of Y-comm. Surprise Trade is also possible locally in the game.
