Sony Interactive Entertainment and Team Asobi’s 3D platformer, Astro Bot, has become one of the fastest-selling original platformers in the last decade.
Chris Dring, Head of GamesIndustry.biz, took to Twitter/X to share that Astro Bot has become the fastest selling original platformer outside of Mario from the last 10 years in the UK, making it a bigger franchise than Sonic, Crash, Yoshi, and Kirby. He responded to a tweet, clarifying that he’s not the one bringing up competition. He believes the game has done very well.
Meanwhile, things are also looking bright for Astro Bot in the US. Mat Piscatella, Executive Director and Video Game Industry Advisor at Circana (NPD), has shared that, across both physical and digital sales, Astro Bot ranked second in terms of unit sales in the US for the week ending September 7, 2024, trailing only NBA 2K25. Additionally, he mentioned that the Astro Bot DualSense controller was the week’s best-selling accessory.
Astro Bot appears to have become an instant hit with PlayStation fans. Those who have already finished the game and discovered all its hidden secrets are undoubtedly carving for more. They need not worry, however, as the game is set to receive free DLC in the near future that will feature brand new VIP bots to rescue. This was revealed by Astro Bot creative director and producer Nicolas Doucet during an interview on the Quest Daily YouTube channel. He cautioned that it won’t be a huge amount of content, but it will be focusing on one of the features that fans enjoyed in Astro’s Playroom. The aforementioned feature is a Speedrun mode, which will offer speedrun levels for players to rush through and replay in order to continue shaving off time from their best runs. He further stated that the development team may also include something a bit more “toy feeling”, which all sorts of players, not just speedrunners, can enjoy.
