Atlus has revealed that it has an undisclosed title in development aside from Project Re: Fantasy and Persona.
During a recent interview, Atlus director Mitsuru Hirata revealed that the studio has an undisclosed game in development besides Project Re; Fantasy and a new entry in the Persona series.
Hirata stated that Shin Megami Tensei V was being developed right next to his desk in the office, while another title was being developed on the other side. He was very conscious of how to position himself in such a situation.
It’s hard to say what this unannounced title is, but based on early speculation, it may be a new entry in the Etrian Odyssey series. Hirata was joined by Eiji Ishida for the interview, and given that the latter is a producer at Atlus 1st Creative Division, the game in question may well be a new entry in the Etrian Odyssey series. Meanwhile, Persona and Project Re: Fantasy are in development at Creative Department 1st Production and Creative Department 3rd Production, respectively.
Etrian Odyssey is a dungeon crawler role-playing game series. It was primarily created and released by Atlus, and owned by Sega. In 2016, the series had sold 1.5 million copies globally. The first game was released for the Nintendo DS. It focuses on first-person exploration of the Yggdrasil Labyrinth, an enigmatic dungeon, using a player-assembled party of characters.
The title has been compared to games like Wizardry and The Bard’s Tale, giving players the task of exploring and mapping a sizable dungeon. The dungeon is traversed by the players in predetermined steps. Movement, chance encounters, and combat are all entirely turn-based because time only exists when an action is performed. With the aid of single-frame 2D sprites for enemies and relatively simple 3D graphics for environments, the game presents the dungeon from the first-person perspective.
