Bloober Team Reveals New Cronos: Lazarus Gameplay and Story Details

by Ali Haider

Bloober Team has revealed new details about Cronos: Lazarus during a developer deep dive, outlining new gameplay mechanics, story elements and enemies coming to the upcoming expansion.

The studio said Lazarus has been designed to offer a much more action-oriented experience than Cronos: The New Dawn. While the base game emphasised careful resource management and survival, players controlling the Pathfinder will be encouraged to play more aggressively, taking the fight directly to enemies instead of cautiously searching each area.

To support that change in pace, the DLC introduces several new abilities centred on mobility and combat.

One of the Pathfinder’s signature abilities is teleportation, which allows players to move across levels more quickly, reach locations that were inaccessible in the base game, avoid incoming enemy attacks and rapidly reposition during combat.

Players will also gain access to a Decoy ability, which creates an image of the Pathfinder that distracts enemies while the real character moves elsewhere. According to the developers, the two abilities are designed to work together, allowing players to deploy a decoy, teleport to a new position and attack while enemies remain focused on the illusion. The combination is intended to provide effective crowd control against groups of Orphans.

The expansion also introduces a new melee weapon called the Gladius. The developers described it as a faster, stronger and more lethal evolution of the dagger featured in the original game.

On the narrative side, Lazarus explores the Warden in greater depth, focusing on a more emotional and personal story. The developers explained that players will experience the Pathfinder’s transformation into the Warden while uncovering what it costs to stand against the Collective.

The Warden’s journey centres on a deeply personal mission involving someone he is obsessed with. He chooses to pursue that mission alone despite strong opposition from the Collective.

A brand-new antagonist will also debut in the expansion. The Collective sends a special Envoy to hunt the Pathfinder, with the developers explaining that this enemy has been specifically designed to counter the protagonist’s abilities. They also teased that the story becomes “bloody” and described it as potentially being “a story about a hunter getting hunted.”

The deep dive also confirmed that familiar characters from the base game will return. The developers jokingly noted that these returning characters “don’t have faces,” while adding that the Warden is a much more talkative protagonist, making the expansion particularly appealing for players who enjoyed his personality and dialogue.

According to Bloober Team, Lazarus was created with two main goals: to let players experience the fan-favourite Pathfinder while witnessing his transformation into the Warden, and to deliver a gameplay style that leans far more heavily into action than the survival-focused experience of the original game.

Cronos: Lazarus is scheduled to launch in autumn 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Linux and Nintendo Switch 2.
