Death Stranding was deemed as a success for Sony along with other franchises like The Last of Us, God of War, and Marvel’s Spider-Man.
While Sony hasn’t disclosed its sales figure for Death Stranding, the game managed to do well enough for them to list them among the franchises that they own. This is according to the Linkedin profile of Michael Mumbauer, Former Studio Head / Senior Director of Visual Arts at PlayStation World Wide Studios.

In an update that was made to his profile, as discovered by Timur22, Michael mentioned Death Stranding and other ‘franchises’ that he has worked on at Sony.
“It’s through his pioneering of technologies for real-time storytelling in the areas of photo real digital characters, real-time cinematography, advanced performance capture and feature film quality animation that franchises like ‘Uncharted’, ‘The Last of Us’, ‘God of War’, ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ and ‘Death Stranding’ achieved record breaking sales and international acclaim for Sony.”
Kojima Productions doesn’t appear to own the Death Stranding IP, but they were still allowed to release the game on PC through the Epic Games Store and Steam. It was published by 505 Games on Steam where according to SteamSpy, it has accumulated more than 1 million users, so it is a success there as well.
Kojima Productions worked on the game along with the support of SIE WWS Studio Guerrilla Games, which helped them with the development by lending them their Decima game engine.
