According to Twitter/X insider Midori, who has leaked details regarding titles in development at Sega and Square Enix, the rumored Final Fantasy IX remake is still in development, and Square Enix plans to reveal new information on some of its titles at the upcoming Xbox Showcase.
Regarding the rumored Final Fantasy IX remake, the insider said that the game was not cancelled as a consequence of the recent restructure of Square Enix during this fiscal year. Based on what she has heard, it was originally outsourced to an external development team. However, Square Enix was not satisfied with the results, and development, therefore, shifted to an in-house development team. She mentioned that the Final Fantasy IX remake is now much further in development. Though, she said that she doesn’t have any concrete information on the project’s scope or release window at this point in time. Based on her estimate, the game could see the light of day before the end of the current fiscal year, though this is not certain.
Furthermore, Midori shared that Square Enix plans on revealing new information on some of its at the forthcoming Xbox Showcase. Summer Game Fest producer Geoff Keighley recently shared that Kingdom Hearts 4 will not make an appearance at the event. This suggests that it may possibly be set for a reveal at the upcoming Xbox Showcase, or later during TGS 2024.
The insider doesn’t know whether the Final Fantasy IX remake will be present at the event, so she cautioned fans to keep expectations in check. That said, she did say that the game is currently planned for release on multiple platforms. Therefore, it isn’t beyond the realm of possibility for it to make an appearance at the show. According to Midori, Square Enix is not prioritizing exclusives anymore, though she thinks there will likely be exceptions for some titles as well as games that already have publishing deals in place, possibly including the third and last entry in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. Regarding the PC platform, she mentioned that titles like the Final Fantasy IX remake will launch on Steam, and not just the Epic Games Store like in the past.
