Known hardware insider KeplerL2 remains firm on the PS6 launch happening in 2027 despite analyst expectations referenced in Embracer Group’s annual report.
KeplerL2 took to the gaming enthusiast NeoGAF forums to react to Embracer Group’s recent annual report, which claimed that some analysts expect the PS6 to launch in 2028 or beyond. Instead of articulating what they know on the matter, the hardware insider simply opted to respond in a comical manner with an animated GIF image featuring actor Danny DeVito nodding his head and saying, “nope…”
As such, KeplerL2 remains firm that the PS6 will not be missing their previously claimed launch window. Back in March, they said that the PS6 still on track for Holiday 2027. Subsequently in April, they conducted an analysis of the rumored 10x leap in ray tracing capability of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s next-gen console, determining that it won’t translate into equally dramatic real-world performance gains. Instead, players can expect an improvement of more than 3x over the base PS5, depending on how heavily a game relies on ray tracing or path tracing.
Using performance data from Assassin’s Creed Shadows as a baseline, the hardware insider broke down how such gains may influence performance. Ray tracing tasks such as screen space tracing, world space tracing, lighting, and denoising collectively take about 5 ms of frame time on the PS5 at a native resolution of 1440p. Applying a theoretical 10x ray tracing boost, alongside a 3x raster/compute performance boost, reduces the workload to roughly 1.35 ms.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has yet to officially announce a release window for the PlayStation 6. During the company’s corporate strategy and earnings announcement presentation in May, president and CEO Hiroki Totoki said that a price and release schedule for the next-gen console hasn’t yet been determined. He expects memory prices to remain high in 2027, and will therefore continue to monitor future developments.
