Some analysts are expecting the PS6 may launch sometime in 2028 or beyond, according to Embracer Group’s latest annual report.
In its discussion of the global console gaming market, Embracer Group’s annual report highlighted several factors affecting the industry, including strong software releases, subscription service growth, and the successful launch of Nintendo’s Switch 2. However, it also pointed to growing concerns surrounding hardware manufacturing costs and supply chain pressures that could impact future console launches.
The company noted that the console games market was valued at approximately 45 billion US Dollars in 2025, representing 22% of the global video game market. The sector grew by 3% year-over-year and is expected to accelerate to 5% growth in 2026, helped by major upcoming releases such as GTA VI and higher average game prices.
However, despite the positive outlook, Embracer warned of several challenges, including uncertainty surrounding U.S. tariffs and rising memory prices driven by increased demand from the artificial intelligence sector. According to the company, these factors could increase console retail prices further and potentially slow market growth.
The report cites anonymous analysts, who expect that the PS6 may launch in 2028 or beyond. “In fact some analysts believe that Sony is now considering pushing back the debut of its next PlayStation console from 2027 to 2028 or even 2029,” the report states. While the analysts aren’t identified, the statement demonstrates Embracer’s lack of faith in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s ability to release its next-generation hardware in 2027 due to rising component costs and broader market conditions. The report highlights higher RAM costs as one factor that could create operational delays for future console launches.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has yet to officially announce a release window for the PlayStation 6. During the company’s corporate strategy and earnings announcement presentation in May, president and CEO Hiroki Totoki said that a price and release schedule for the next-gen console hasn’t yet been determined. He expects memory prices to remain high in 2027, and will therefore continue to monitor future developments.
