Xbox is already looking to reverse course on its decision to have first-party console exclusives, it is claimed.
Known insider SneakersSO took to the NeoGAF forums to share his view on Xbox’s long-term financial performance following recent comments from Satya Nadella regarding the gaming division’s sustainability, stating that the Microsoft CEO effectively acknowledged that Xbox has relied on Microsoft subsidies throughout most of its existence. According to them, the company leadership is now reassessing which parts of the gaming business are genuinely sustainable and which may not fit into the company’s future plans.
The insider stated that Microsoft internally recognizes that the recent messaging regarding console exclusives was largely intended for convention season and doesn’t represent a long-term strategy. “I know they are under no illusion that the entirely fan-service pleasing ‘exclusive’ talk was nothing more a show for convention season,” they claimed. “Already there is talk about how to reverse course on it.”
SneakersSO also talked about growing skepticism among Microsoft’s senior leadership regarding Xbox’s financial performance. According to them, company leadership secured more than 100 billion US Dollars in investment over several years, including the approximately 70 billion US Dollar acquisition of Activision Blizzard. These investments were allegedly justified through projections tied to subscription growth, Game Pass adoption, and broader ecosystem expansion.
However, the insider claimed that many of those expected returns have failed to materialize at the levels originally projected. According to them, Microsoft executives are now taking a much closer look at the division’s financial realities and evaluating whether previous forecasts were overly optimistic. They further stated that Microsoft is increasingly focused on identifying a smaller, sustainable version of Xbox by evaluating which studios, IPs, and initiatives should remain a part of the business moving forward.
Meanwhile, Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball took to Twitter/X to respond to SneakersSO’s claims, saying that they are false. According to him, Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will remain console exclusives. He said that there are no conversations going on to “reverse course.” He reaffirmed that Xbox players can continue to expect signature first-party console exclusives every year.
