Consumers in Japan are preferring the cheaper Japanese language-only Nintendo Switch 2 model, resulting in a higher lottery success for the pricier global version.

Twitter/X user Genki_JPN, who is known for sharing video game news and insight from Japan, has shared that everyone he knows in Japan who applied for the multi-language version of the Nintendo Switch 2 in the country were able to win the registration lottery for purchasing the upcoming console on the My Nintendo store.

Going by the much higher success rate for the multi-language Nintendo Switch 2 lottery in Japan, it appears that a vast majority of Japanese consumers signed up for the much cheaper Japanese language-only model lottery, which far lessened their chances of winning. It’s also worth taking into account that there is a  substantial difference in price between both versions of the upcoming console. The Japanese language-only model retails for a rough equivalent of 350 US Dollars, while the multi-language model sells for an equivalent of 490 US Dollars.

It was recently revealed by Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa that around 2.2 million individuals in Japan have registered for a Switch 2 through the My Nintendo store. He mentioned that in order to deliver the upcoming console to buyers, the company has procured many materials and proceeded with production in advance. However, Furukawa further stated that 2.2 million registrations far exceed Nintendo’s expectations and far exceeds the number of Switch 2 consoles that can be delivered from the My Nintendo Store in Japan at launch on June 5, 2025. Therefore, he said that a considerable number of customers will not be chosen for the chance to purchase the Nintendo Switch 2.

The Nintendo president also mentioned that, in order to avoid the trouble of re-applying for those who were not selected in the first lottery, the My Nintendo Store will automatically carry over those who were not selected the first time to the second lottery. However, even including the number of units for the second lottery, the company cannot respond to all of the applications it has received. As such, he deeply apologized for not being able to meet the demand for Switch 2, despite Nintendo making preparations in advance.
