Square Enix’s upcoming action role-playing game, Kingdom Hearts 4, will not be making an appearance at Summer Game Fest 2024.

Summer Game Fest producer Geoff Keighley has revealed on a recent stream on The Game Awards Twitch channel that Kingdom Hearts 4 will not have any presence at the forthcoming event. He mentioned that people keep asking about the game, and that he doesn’t know why. He said that Kingdom Hearts fans are setting themselves up for “failure”, though he did add that they “can keep hoping”.

It’s not unusual for games to make a surprise appearance at such events despite the official word stating otherwise. That said, in this case, we do believe that Kingdom Hearts 4’s next appearance will likely be at Tokyo Game Show 2024. Nevertheless, a brief teaser may yet appear at Summer Game Fest 2024. Only time will tell whether this is the case. As Keighley suggested, fans may keep hope alive.

Not much is known about Kingdom Hearts 4 at this point in time. Previously, Twitter/X insider, DanielRPK, had claimed that the game is scheduled for release in the year 2025. Given his good track record with such leaks, it seems quite probably that it may indeed hit store shelves sometime by the end of next year. That said, game development is a complex undertaking, and it may get pushed to early 2026 if things don’t come together on schedule. The same insider had also shared that Disney is working on an adaptation of Kingdom Hearts, though it is currently unknown whether it will be a film or a TV series. Perhaps this is what series creator Tetsuya Nomura meant when he vaguely talked about a different direction for the series. As for whether the movie or TV series will tell its own story or whether it will be a re-telling of the original Kingdom Hearts is unknown at this point.
