Kingdom Hearts III Impresses Visually on Switch 2, But Performance Falls Short in Early Tests

by Salal Awan

Early footage of Kingdom Hearts III running natively on Nintendo Switch 2 suggests the game delivers impressive visual quality, though performance appears to be less consistent than some fans may have hoped.

According to comparison tests, the visual gap between the Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 versions in docked mode is surprisingly small. The PS5 version used for comparison was the backward-compatible PlayStation 4 release, meaning its maximum resolution is limited to PS4 Pro specifications. Despite the similar image quality, the PlayStation 5’s ability to maintain 60fps creates a noticeably smoother experience.

Handheld mode on Nintendo Switch 2 introduces some compromises, with reductions in resolution and reflection quality. Even so, the system reportedly performs better than the Steam Deck running the game on low settings, offering a more stable overall experience in direct comparisons.

The Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] is scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 8, 2026. Unlike the original Nintendo Switch release, which relied on cloud streaming technology, the new version is a fully native port designed for the upgraded hardware.

Kingdom Hearts III originally served as the conclusion to the franchise’s long-running Dark Seeker Saga, following Sora, Donald, and Goofy on a journey across Disney and Pixar-inspired worlds. The game remains one of the series’ most ambitious entries, and its arrival as a native release on Nintendo Switch 2 marks a significant improvement over the cloud-based version previously available on Nintendo hardware.
