Atlus’ latest role-playing game, Metaphor: ReFantazio, is the biggest launch ever for the developer on Valve’s digital distribution platform, Steam.
According to the Steam concurrent player stats, Metaphor: ReFantazio is now the most successful launch for an Atlus game on the platform. The role-playing game has reached an all-time peak of 61,969 players since its release earlier today on October 11, 2024.
In comparison to Metaphor: ReFantazio’s current all-time peak of 61,969 players, Persona 3 Reload has a concurrent player count of 45,002 players and Persona 5 Royal has a concurrent player count of 35,474 players. As is usually the case with major releases on Steam, the concurrent player count for Metaphor: ReFantazio is expected to cross the 70,000 mark over the weekend. Just how high it will go is tough to guess at this point, but we’re certain that Atlus is already pleased with these results.
Meanwhile, for those playing on PS5, it was recently found that the PS4 version of Metaphor: ReFantazio offers smoother performance via backward compatibility compared to the native release. That said, while running the PS4 version of Metaphor: ReFantazio via backward compatibility on PS5 does deliver stable performance that meets its target of 60 fps, image quality takes a major hit compared to the native PS5 version. The latter runs at a native resolution of 1656p, while the PS4 version runs at a native 1080p on the Pro console.
Metaphor: ReFantazio involves the player traveling the world in an armored tank to gather supporters for an election to become king, as the previous king and his son have died. As they progress through the game, they make bonds with the citizenry and perform favors to get them on their side. ReFantazio features multiple races and archetypes derived from Jung’s theory, similar to Personas.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is now available on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.
