Minecraft Receives ESRB Rating for Nintendo Switch 2

Minecraft has received an ESRB rating for Nintendo Switch 2, indicating that Mojang’s popular sandbox game is likely headed to Nintendo’s latest platform.

The newly published rating lists Nintendo Switch 2 as the game’s platform and assigns Minecraft an E10+ rating for Everyone 10+ due to Fantasy Violence. The rating also includes the descriptors “Users Interact” and “In-Game Purchases.”

According to the ESRB rating summary, Minecraft is described as “a sandbox adventure game in which players explore and mine/harvest cube-shaped materials.” Players can traverse open-world environments, construct buildings, and craft equipment including swords, axes, bows, potions, and magical staffs.

The rating summary also notes that players may encounter and fight various enemies such as zombies, skeletons, wizards, and mages. Combat involves repeatedly attacking enemies until they collapse and is accompanied by “short cries/grunts of pain, impact sounds, and occasional explosions.” The ESRB further mentions that players can use weapons against animals and villagers, although such actions are not encouraged by the game.

While Microsoft and Mojang have not yet formally announced a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Minecraft, the appearance of an ESRB rating is often one of the final steps before a game’s release or official reveal. The listing strongly suggests that a dedicated version for Nintendo’s new hardware is in development or nearing launch.

Minecraft is already available on the original Nintendo Switch through the Bedrock Edition, which supports cross-platform multiplayer and access to content from the Minecraft Marketplace. The newly issued ESRB rating, however, specifically references Nintendo Switch 2, pointing to a version tailored for the new console.
