Nintendo has officially announced that its next Nintendo Direct presentation will take place on June 9 at 7:00 AM PT, confirming reports that had circulated in recent days regarding the company’s summer showcase plans.

The announcement follows a wave of speculation that began after industry insider Jeff Grubb claimed he had been hearing that a Nintendo Direct was scheduled for June 9. During an episode of the Last of the Nintendogs podcast, Grubb said the date he kept hearing was “next Tuesday and Tuesday morning specifically,” while cautioning that scheduling details can sometimes shift due to time zone differences.

Further speculation emerged when Nintendo announced planned maintenance for the Nintendo Store on June 9. At the time, many fans viewed the timing as a potential indicator that a Direct presentation was imminent. However, Nintendo later postponed the maintenance to June 11, leading some to wonder whether the rumored showcase had also been delayed.

Separately, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers recently noticed major version updates for the NES, SNES, and Game Boy Nintendo Classics applications. Dataminer Yakumono reported that the updates contained references to an unreleased challenge system designed for select games. According to the findings, the feature appears to function similarly to challenge scenarios seen in Nintendo’s NES Remix series, though it is not structured as a traditional achievement system.

The timing of those updates prompted speculation that Nintendo was preparing announcements related to its retro game services ahead of a major presentation. While Nintendo has not confirmed any connection between the app updates and the upcoming Direct, the discoveries have fueled expectations regarding potential Nintendo Switch Online announcements.
