Nintendo has expanded its list of top-selling franchise from five to eight with the addition of two new first-party franchises.
Previously, Nintendo of America had highlighted a total of five top-selling franchises on its official website, namely Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, and Pikmin. After the recent update, the website features an updated list of characters/franchises new banner that now includes Kirby, Pokemon, and Metroid.

Furthermore, two additional Nintendo franchise, Donkey Kong and Fire Emblem, are highlighted alongside the aforementioned eight in the ‘Characters’ section of the official web store. The respective games, characters and merchandise for each of these top 10 Nintendo franchises are now prominently featured.

The addition of the Metroid franchise to the above list suggests that Nintendo is happy with the performance of recent entries in the series, namely Metroid Dread and Metroid Prime Remastered. During a Q&A session at Nintendo’s recent general shareholders meeting, Shinya Takahashi, Senior Managing Executive Officer and Corporate Director at Nintendo, had a big smile on his face while footage from the upcoming Metroid Prime 4: Beyond was shown during a highlight reel, indicating that the company has a positive outlook towards the game.
As for the best-selling Nintendo Switch games, as of December 31, 2024, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe leads the way with 67.35 million units, followed by Animal Crossing: New Horizons with 47.44 million units, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with 35.88 million units, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with 32.62 million units, Super Mario Odyssey with 29.04 million units, Pokémon Sword/ Pokémon Shield with 26.60 million units, Pokémon Scarlet/ Pokémon Violet with 26.38 million units, Super Mario Party with 21.10 million units, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe with 18.06 million units.
