Nintendo may be working on a solution to the lack of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support when running the Switch 2 in docked mode.

A new job listing from Nintendo Technology Development (NTD) hints that the company may be looking for a solution to the lack of VRR support on Switch 2 when running the console in docked mode. The opening is for the position of a Senior Engineer, Display, with responsibilities focused on designing and implementing display software for both current and future Nintendo products.

According to the listing, the successful candidate will be expected to “Architect, design, and implement display driver stack for use with current and future products” and “Develop and refine display software stack to ensure compliance with various display standards and specifications.” The role also involves researching new display technologies that can be deployed on Nintendo’s gaming hardware.

Among the required qualifications is an understanding of display standards and specifications, including HDMI, DSI, DisplayPort, and EDID. Furthermore, Nintendo states that applicants should have “Knowledge of display technologies such as HDR and VRR.” While HDR support is already available on the Switch 2, VRR remains limited to the handheld mode.

While this doesn’t confirm that Nintendo is actively developing docked VRR support, it does suggest that the company considers VRR expertise valuable for its products. Since one of the primary responsibilities of the new recruit is improving the display driver stack and ensuring compliance with display standards, addressing current Switch 2 HDMI output limitations would likely fall within the scope of the role.

It’s also worth noting that display driver development is often software-focused. If the underlying hardware already supports the necessary functionality, certain features can sometimes be enabled or improved through firmware and system software updates. In this case, we already know that nothing in the Nintendo Switch 2 dock hardware limits the use of VRR. Read about it here.
