Star Citizen Surpasses $1 Billion in Crowdfunding After More Than a Decade in Development

Star Citizen has officially surpassed $1 billion in total crowdfunding, marking another major milestone for Cloud Imperium Games’ long-running space simulation project.

According to the game’s live funding tracker, Star Citizen has now raised more than $1,001,354,314 from over 6.5 million registered users. The achievement comes more than a decade after development first began and further cements the title as the largest crowdfunded game project in the industry.

Originally launched through a Kickstarter campaign in 2012, Star Citizen started with roughly $2.1 million in backing before expanding into a massive ongoing crowdfunding operation driven directly by its community. The project crossed the $500 million funding mark in 2022 and continued accelerating afterward, reportedly generating around $120 million during 2025 alone.

Developed by Cloud Imperium Games, Star Citizen aims to deliver a large-scale multiplayer space sandbox that combines space combat, trading, mining, first-person shooter gameplay, and planetary exploration within a seamless online universe. The game remains in an ongoing alpha state and is widely known for both its ambitious technical scope and prolonged development cycle.

Over the years, the project has drawn attention for its highly detailed ships and environments, alongside criticism tied to technical instability and expensive virtual ship sales. Funding has continued to grow through recurring in-game events and premium spacecraft offerings, including recently introduced high-end ship concepts priced in the thousands of dollars.

Despite the scale of its crowdfunding success, Star Citizen still does not have a finalized release date after more than ten years in development.s
