Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio director Masayoshi Yokoyama has revealed several new details about Stranger Than Heaven in a recent interview with Automaton Media Japan, offering fresh insight into the game’s development, structure and storytelling.
According to Yokoyama, the game’s final title was chosen with input from Sega’s overseas teams as the studio aimed for a name that would be understood worldwide rather than using separate Japanese and Western titles. He also revealed that Sega president Shuji Utsumi was initially unconvinced by the name Stranger Than Heaven, believing it should have been something simpler, such as “Dragon Punch.”
Yokoyama confirmed that the game’s Kure setting was inspired by the classic Battles Without Honor and Humanity film series. While players will be able to visit multiple historical eras, each period will feature fewer “play spots” than fans may expect. Instead, every era will include its own selection of minigames, while cities will place a greater emphasis on enterable buildings rather than overall map size.
The studio is also taking a different approach to side content. Yokoyama said the game’s substories will head in “a completely different direction” compared to previous Like a Dragon titles.
Historical authenticity will not always take priority. As an example, Yokoyama pointed out that the 1951 Atami section includes Hotel New Akao despite the real building not opening until 1954. He added that the story will avoid depicting major historical events unless protagonist Makoto is directly involved in them.
The interview also suggests players will only be able to revisit previous eras during Premium Adventure rather than returning to a point immediately before the final battle, a structure commonly used in earlier Like a Dragon games.
Yokoyama revealed that the inclusion of Tupac Shakur was a late development, likely influenced by Snoop Dogg’s involvement, adding that the rapper will play a significant role in the story.
Development of the narrative has been a lengthy process. Yokoyama said he has been working on the story for six to seven years, while the overall setting was finalised around four years ago.
He also confirmed that more information about Stranger Than Heaven will be revealed during Tokyo Game Show this September.
Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled to launch on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
