Supergirl Gets Digital Release Date Following Disappointing Box Office Run

Warner Bros. is reportedly planning to release Supergirl on video-on-demand platforms on July 28, making the latest DC Universe film available to digital audiences shortly after its theatrical run.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin. The film follows Kara’s journey from a shattered fragment of Krypton to Earth, taking a darker approach to the character by focusing on themes of survival, trauma and identity.

The film was intended to serve as a key part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe, but it struggled at the global box office. Supergirl opened to $38 million domestically and $68 million worldwide before facing a sharp 74% drop in its second weekend amid competition from Toy Story 5.

Critical reception was also mixed, with the film holding a 56% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Produced on a reported $170 million budget, alongside an estimated $120 million marketing campaign, Supergirl is projected to finish its theatrical run with around $150 million at the worldwide box office.

The film’s digital debut on July 28 will give audiences another opportunity to watch the latest chapter in the new DC Universe from home.
