Swords of Legends Showcases Combat in New SGF Trailer

by Greg Martin

Aurogon Shanghai used Summer Game Fest 2026 to debut a new gameplay-focused trailer for its upcoming action RPG Swords of Legends, offering a detailed look at combat, boss encounters, and one of the game’s core companion systems ahead of its release on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

The latest footage centers on a battle against Kong Kong Zi, known as the Master of Cantrip, a unique boss inspired by traditional Chinese conjuring arts. Rather than relying on a purely fantastical creation, the character draws from real-world stage magic traditions that have existed in Chinese culture for centuries. The encounter showcases the game’s fast-paced combat mechanics as players engage the theatrical adversary in a visually elaborate fight built around illusion and spectacle.

Set during a primordial era inspired by classical Chinese literature, Swords of Legends takes place in a world where mortals, gods, demons, and wandering souls coexist. Players assume the role of a Sipan, an Arbiter of the Underworld who has been returned to the mortal realm by the Judge of King Yama. Tasked with guiding lost souls that cannot find their way home, the protagonist embarks on a journey that explores both the living world and the realm of the dead.

The trailer also introduces the Spirit Companion system, one of the game’s major gameplay features. Throughout the adventure, players can recruit souls from the spirit realm to fight alongside them. These companions can absorb damage, assist during combat, and participate in powerful linked finishing attacks. The showcase offered a first look at the Ox, a spectral companion described as a horned traveler from the underworld who joins players in battle with a unique set of abilities.

Combat in Swords of Legends is built around a variety of weapons, mystical powers, and summonable entities. Players will be able to combine different fighting styles while exploiting enemy weaknesses using techniques drawn from both the mortal and spiritual worlds. According to Aurogon Shanghai, the goal is to create a combat system that rewards adaptability and strategic use of abilities rather than relying solely on direct attacks.

The game’s setting is heavily influenced by Chinese mythology, particularly stories and creatures found in the ancient text Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing). Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the world features vast landscapes, ancient temples, remote mountain settlements, and supernatural beings ranging from flower spirits to ghosts and legendary monsters. The developer describes the environment as a living painting inspired by traditional Chinese artistic themes.

Beyond combat, Swords of Legends places significant emphasis on its narrative. Many of the souls encountered throughout the journey possess unresolved regrets and personal burdens. Players can confront these spirits in battle before helping them find peace, ultimately recruiting them as companions. The developer says these stories are intended to reflect the protagonist’s own search for purpose and identity, creating a narrative centered on life, death, and self-discovery.

Swords of Legends serves as the latest entry in Aurogon Shanghai’s long-running Gujian franchise, though it is designed as a standalone adventure that newcomers can enjoy without prior knowledge of the series. The studio, known for nearly two decades of work in the Chinese RPG space, is bringing the title to a global audience on PC and consoles.

A release date has not yet been announced, but Swords of Legends is currently in development for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, with wishlists now available on Steam.
