Square Enix’s role-playing games, Chrono Trigger and Xenogears, are the games fans in Japan most want to see get remakes or remasters.
Famitsu magazine (via Genki_JPN on Twitter/X) recently conducted a survey on the games its readers most want to see get remakes or remasters, and the resultant list is led by Square Enix’s Chrono Trigger and Xenogears. A total of 5,400 individuals from Japan participated in said survey.

As seen above, the list is dominated by classic JRPGs like Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Final Fantasy VIII, Tales of the Abyss, Persona 2, Final Fantasy IX, Dragon Quest IX, Final Fantasy VI, Dragon Quest V, and Shadow Hearts.
In February, known insider John Harker took to the Reset Era forums to comment on a thread about a survey from Square Enix, in which the publisher asked whether there is a Square Enix title respondents wanted to see a remake of in the future. He claimed that a Chrono Trigger remake is already in development, and said that fans should instead be asking for new entries in dormant Square Enix franchises. “The chrono stuff is already in dev tho. Let’s ask for something else, like opening back up triangle strategy 2 or a legit sequel to final fantasy tactics!” He didn’t mention a release window, nor did he share whether it would use the HD-2D aesthetic or be a full-fledged 3D re-imagining.
Around 3 years ago, in a Q&A session held during the publisher’s 43rd Annual Shareholders Meeting on June 23, 2023, Square Enix revealed that it was considering working on more remasters of older classics from its catalog after the success of the Final Fantasy I-VI Pixel Remaster.
