Digital Foundry Analysis Suggests PS5 Remains the Best Platform for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

A new technical analysis from Digital Foundry suggests that PlayStation 5 remains the best platform for experiencing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, despite the recent arrival of the RPG on Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.

The comparison examined the game’s performance and image quality across all available console platforms. While each version offers its own strengths, Digital Foundry concluded that Sony’s console continues to provide the most consistent overall experience.

According to the analysis, the PlayStation 5 version avoids several issues that currently affect the Xbox releases. Both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S reportedly suffer from a camera judder bug in performance mode, while Variable Refresh Rate support is said to be functioning incorrectly. The report also notes that performance mode on Xbox Series X frequently falls below its 60 FPS target, with frame rates commonly dropping into the 50s and occasionally reaching the low 40s in demanding open-world areas.

Xbox Series X does offer some advantages. Its performance mode can reach a higher peak internal resolution of 1368p compared to approximately 1260p on PS5, while its graphics mode delivers a stable native 4K presentation. However, Digital Foundry found that these benefits are offset by the platform’s unresolved performance issues.

The Xbox Series S version delivers surprisingly competitive frame rates in some scenarios due to reduced environmental complexity, occasionally outperforming Series X in demanding areas. However, the lower-end console makes significant image-quality sacrifices, with internal resolutions dropping as low as 540p and relying on an aggressive upscaling solution that reportedly results in a noticeably blurry image.

Meanwhile, Digital Foundry described the Nintendo Switch 2 release as an impressive technical achievement. The hybrid console runs the game at a dynamic internal resolution ranging from 540p to 1080p while docked and between 380p and 756p in handheld mode, using DLSS reconstruction to improve image quality. The game targets 30 FPS and generally maintains that performance level, although occasional drops can occur during open-world exploration and large boss encounters.

The analysis praised the Switch 2 version for retaining key visual features such as screen-space reflections, dynamic shadows, object physics, and character model quality. However, achieving the portable version required substantial compromises, including lower-quality textures, reduced foliage density, shorter shadow draw distances, more aggressive level-of-detail transitions, and downgraded environmental effects.

While the Xbox and Switch 2 ports successfully bring Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to new audiences, Digital Foundry’s findings indicate that PlayStation 5 continues to offer the strongest balance of image quality, performance, and technical stability, making it the preferred platform for Square Enix’s acclaimed action RPG.
