Supermassive Games has officially released Directive 8020 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC via Steam. The cinematic sci-fi survival horror title marks the latest entry in The Dark Pictures series and introduces several major gameplay changes to the studio’s established narrative horror formula.
Set aboard the colony ship Cassiopeia, Directive 8020 follows a crew sent to the distant planet Tau Ceti f as humanity searches for a new home while Earth faces collapse. After crash landing on the planet, the crew encounters a hostile alien organism capable of perfectly imitating humans, leading to escalating paranoia and mistrust among survivors.
Supermassive Games describes the project as a significant evolution of The Dark Pictures format, blending cinematic storytelling with survival mechanics and real-time threats. Unlike previous entries that relied heavily on quick decision-making and branching dialogue, Directive 8020 introduces stealth elements, improvised weapons, and more active gameplay sequences that involve direct encounters with alien enemies.
The game also expands on player choice through a new feature called Turning Points, which allows players to revisit major decisions and alter the course of the story. Multiple endings and hidden narrative paths are included, with the studio once again emphasizing that every playable character can either survive or die depending on player actions.
Lashana Lynch stars as pilot Brianna Young, leading a cast caught in increasingly dangerous situations as the crew struggles to determine who can still be trusted. The game can be played solo or with up to five players locally through Movie Night mode, while online multiplayer is planned to arrive in a future update.
According to creative director Will Doyle, Directive 8020 marks a new direction for the studio by combining its cinematic horror approach with a science-fiction setting for the first time. The development team focused on refining both storytelling and gameplay systems to create a more intense and reactive experience.
Directive 8020 is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC via Steam.
