Bandai Namco Entertainment announced today that Dragon Ball: Sparking ZERO, the long-awaited sequel to the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi series, has sold over 5 million units worldwide since its October launch. The title now stands as the fastest-selling console game in the franchise’s history, revitalizing a legacy dormant for over 15 years.
Developed by Spike Chunsoft, Sparking ZERO leverages Unreal Engine 5 to deliver cinematic visuals faithful to the iconic anime, paired with high-octane combat and destructible 3D environments. The game’s blend of single-player and multiplayer modes has resonated with fans, offering online battles, cooperative play, and an Episode Battle mode that recreates pivotal moments from the Dragon Ball saga. A Custom Battle feature further allows players to craft unique scenarios using a roster of 182 characters, stages, and items.
Post-launch support has bolstered the game’s momentum, including the recent Hero of Justice DLC, which introduced 11 new fighters such as Gohan Beast and Cell Max. Frequent content updates and officially sanctioned tournaments have solidified its position as a standout entry in the franchise.
Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is the first major fighting game in the Budokai Tenkaichi series, based on the Dragon Ball franchise. It follows a series of successful video games, including Dragon Ball Kakarot, Dragon Ball Xenoverse, and Dragon Ball FighterZ. Bandai Namco has collaborated with several developers, such as Arc System Works and Spike Chunsoft, to bring these titles to the forefront. The most recent release is exclusive to current-generation consoles, making its sales milestone particularly impressive given the smaller player base compared to cross-generation releases.
The game is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. For more information, you can read our review.
