FFXIV Producer Discusses Switch 2 Performance, Joy-Con Mouse Support, and PS4 Limitations

Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki Yoshida has shared new details about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 version, addressing performance expectations, control options, and long-term platform support. The MMORPG is scheduled to launch on the new hardware in August 2026, marking its first appearance on a Nintendo system.

During a recent interview with Famitsu, Yoshida confirmed that Joy-Con 2 mouse controls will be supported across the game. He noted, “The Joy-Con 2 mouse control is available. However, I myself haven’t attempted Zero difficulty using the mouse yet… (wry smile).” He added that while the feature will be tested internally, he personally prefers traditional controls, stating, “since the Nintendo Switch 2 version can also be played with a controller, I think I’ll stick to that.”

Yoshida also highlighted the flexibility of the platform, pointing to both docked and handheld play styles. He explained that players can connect a mouse and keyboard for more demanding content, while handheld mode is better suited for casual activities such as crafting and gathering. According to him, this hybrid approach allows for a playstyle that fits the hardware particularly well.

On the technical side, Yoshida addressed concerns about system performance following the announcement. He stated, “we’ve thoroughly optimized the game. Performance within the content itself is absolutely fine.” While he acknowledged that crowded areas may present challenges, he said the game is expected to run “stably at around 30 frames per second,” with smoother performance during instanced gameplay.

The producer also commented on the future of the PlayStation 4 version. He clarified that any eventual transition away from the platform is not due to graphical limitations, but rather underlying data constraints. “It is due to the ‘data handling limits’ inherent in the hardware’s design,” Yoshida said, noting that upcoming expansions will push the system beyond its capacity. He added that support will not end immediately, but encouraged players to begin moving to PlayStation 5 over time.

Final Fantasy XIV’s Switch 2 release will include support for keyboard and mouse setups alongside controller options, offering a range of input methods. The version will also feature a separate subscription model, with discounted access for existing players.
