Final Fantasy XV director, Hajime Tabata, has formed a new studio, and is working on a brand new project that may be a PlayStation exclusive. According to a new rumor, the studio has entered a partnership with Sony for the development of its next game.

The unannounced game is likely to be a PlayStation console exclusive, meaning that it will possibly release on PC simultaneously or at a later date. While there’s no word on whether it will be a cross-gen title or will specifically target the PS5 hardware, given the early state of the project, it is likely to be a PS5 game that will take advantage of its super fast IO throughput and immersive DualSense features.

According to the source, the unannounced PlayStation exclusive project from former Final Fantasy director will be revealed at the next PlayStation event.

Final Fantasy XV was published on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2016, Microsoft Windows in 2018, and Stadia as a launch game in 2019. It is the fifteenth major entry in the Final Fantasy series. The game has an open world setting and an action-based combat system, with quick-switching weapons, elemental magic, and additional elements like vehicle travel and camping. The original campaign was subsequently supplemented with downloadable content, which included more gameplay options, such as additional playable characters as well as multiplayer.

The game is set on the fictitious planet of Eos. Aside from Insomnia, Lucis’ capital, the whole world is ruled by the Niflheim empire, which seeks possession of the mystical Crystal guarded by the Lucian royal line. Niflheim raids the capital and snatches the Crystal on the eve of peace talks. The heir to the Lucian throne, Noctis Lucis Caelum, sets out on a mission to save the Crystal and vanquish Niflheim. Later, he discovers his true identity as the “True King,” destined to wield the Crystal’s abilities to save Eos from perpetual darkness. Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy, a subseries of games linked by a shared mythology that includes Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Type-0, has a thematic relationship with the game.
